I am going to start this post off by saying that I am not a lawyer. I did take 1 legal course in high school and it was so much fun. The mock trial we did was a criminal case so not even sure this experience would have helped me. However, I did write a blog post for a lawyer and that was hard as hell so I will say it again, I am NOT a lawyer.
Have you heard of having terms and conditions, a disclaimer, and a privacy policy on your blog? Do you know why you should have them on your blog? If not, you are in the right place. I will share what each of them is, why you need them, and show you mine as an example. Another reminder for you, I am NOT a lawyer. These are 3 pages that I have created myself without the use of an attorney.
Of course, having these 3 pages on your blog may not stop someone from coming after you in a legal fashion but they are here to protect you, your business, and your family. THE 3 IMPORTANT PAGES TO HAVE ON YOUR BLOG
When I began blogging, these 3 pages were never even a thought to me. I was blogging just to write. I never truly realized that someone would be willing to come after me financially for something that I wrote. During my Blogology course, we cover adding these important pages to your website. I have never had any legal troubles with my blog but these pages are super important and worth having.
Terms and Conditions Policy
This policy is basically laying out the rules of your website. This will allow your readers to know the rules of your website, that you own the material that is on your website, and if you have any other policies in place. Things to include in your terms and conditions policy are:
Refund Policy
Influencer Policy
Payment Policy
Notification of Changes to Policy
Intellectual Property Rights
Disclaimer
The purpose of a disclaimer is to tell anyone who visits your site that the material on your website is for informational purposes only. It concludes that I can not be held liable for anything they do with the information that they read on my site.
My disclaimer tells the reader that I try to keep the information up to date and correct but that some of the information may not be. I also include in my disclaimer that I use links to send readers to other websites. This means that I have no control over what is on the other website and I again, have no liability for what is on that other site.
Privacy Policy
A privacy policy informs your readers and anyone who visits your site what information you are collecting and how you are going to use that information.
Make it clear to your readers that if you are collecting their data as you will be if you use Google Analytics or any other type of visitor analytics. I also let my readers know that I do not sell their information to a third party and that it is only used to help improve my site.
I have all 3 of these pages on my blog in the footer. I create the pages and then hide them and place them inside the footer of my website. This allows for someone to click on any of them and it will take them to that page to read. I also included when I last updated all of them. For me, I updated them in February 2020. I plan to update them once a year.
