A Letter To My Daughter On Her 11th Birthday

When I picture our family without you, I can’t.

I have been staring at this blank Google Doc for a while now and I am trying to come up with the perfect things to tell you. I am coming up empty.

You remind me of me.

Every day I look at you, it is as if I am looking in a mirror.

The clothes that you wear.

The way you would rather stay in bed than get up in the morning.

The way you laugh.

How sensitive you are.

The way you are confident but unsure all at the same time.

Your aspiration to be a writer someday.

There are moments when I don’t know what to say to you or how to help you through a problem. I want to protect you forever BUT as each day passes, I can see that you don’t need me to do that anymore.

Memories are a strange thing. I can remember some days with you so clearly and other days I wish that I had those memories as strong as I used to. Watching you grow up has been an experience that I never truly expected.

You are full of fire.

You are full of wonder.

You are full of attitude.

Every day you remind me of me.

You are the ONLY one that looks like me.

You are the ONLY one that fights me the way that you do.

You test my patience.

You love hard and fast.

You are sensitive and emotional.

You are perfect in every way!!

I wish that I had the words to tell you how much I love you! There truly are no words!! 11 years ago you came into this world a spitfire, and every single day since you have stepped into that attitude. You have added an element to this family that I didn’t know was possible.

Remember to ALWAYS be you!

Remember to ALWAYS love who you are!

Remember to ALWAYS be fierce and unstoppable.

Remember to ALWAYS keep that fire inside and never give it up!

You beautiful, are going to change the world someday and I can’t wait to watch it happen!!

LIFE LESSONS I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER

Life moves so quickly. As a mom, I wish that I could slow it down. I wish that you could see yourself through my eyes. The love and wonder I have for you bring a smile to my face.

Here are some things that I want you to remember as you go through the years.

LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR EVERY DAY AND SAY, I LOVE YOU

There are going to be times in your life when everything feels like it is falling apart. When you feel like you can’t love yourself because of the words other people have said. I am here to remind you that those voices don’t matter.

I let those words take over my life for years and I don’t want the same thing to happen to you. When you wake up, when you fall asleep, when you use the bathroom. Every time you walk where there is a mirror, repeat those words to yourself.

DON’T LOSE FOCUS ON YOUR DREAMS

You can accomplish anything that you want to. You have to be dedicated and focused because there are going to be times when those around you won’t believe in your vision.

That doesn’t matter!!!

Focus on your dreams and bring that vision to life. You are the only one who can block your way!

GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO BE KIND

Whether that is telling someone that they look beautiful or holding the door open, go out of your way to be kind. The world can be harsh and it needs more love. Be that love that it needs.

DON’T BUY CLOTHES THE WEEK BEFORE AND OF YOUR PERIOD

This has happened to me and I find that the clothes are too big for me. Wait until any other time of the month to purchase clothing for yourself. No one wants their new clothes to not fit nicely.

ENJOY BEING IN THE KITCHEN

Food isn’t the enemy. I hope that I will teach you this lesson as you grow. Learn to love cooking and baking. Learn to have fun in the kitchen. Fuel your body in a way that makes you feel good and that you enjoy.

LEARN TO BE COMFORTABLE WITHOUT MAKE-UP ON

Embrace your natural beauty. You are gorgeous. This doesn’t mean that you can’t wear make-up. It means that you need to love your skin the way it is. Be comfortable without make-up on.

YOU CAN ALWAYS TALK TO ME

No matter how old you are.

No matter what time it is.

No matter where you are.

You can talk to me about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. I will always be your biggest supporter and your loudest cheerleader!!

I am truly honoured that I get to be your mom. That I get the opportunity to watch you grow, succeed, and become this beautiful woman. I am forever grateful that you chose me to be your mom.

Happy 11th birthday my beautiful girl!!!
